How to Choose the Best Meat Slicer

If you’re planning to get the best meat slicer for yourself, then there are a few things to keep in mind. The main objective of this segment is to help you sort your priorities and choose something that goes the long run for you.

Getting the appropriate model for yourself can be a daunting task, especially with all the recent innovations and the features that are offered in the market. However, with this guide, you’ll have a head-start.

Below, we’ll highlight our best tips and tricks that you can use to get the right meat slicer for yourself. Note that these tips can either work in conjunction, or you can be specific with what you choose to follow. That is entirely up to you.

However, we highly recommend that you adhere to all that is mentioned below and then proceed to choose the right model for yourself.

Without further ado, here are our top things to consider when buying the right meat slicer for yourself!

As of yet, there are two types of meat slicers currently available on the market: electric and manual.

Both of them have their respective pros and cons. Below, we’ll briefly give you a glimpse of what to anticipate should you choose to go with either of them.

Electrical meat slicer

As the name implies, this type of meat slicer uses electricity as its main mode of operation. It’s fair to also assume that such models are automated and don’t really require any sort of intervention by the user.

All that you’ll have to do is put the object to be cut in and then let the machine do its job.

Some electric-based models can also be converted into manual mode, which can help you be a little more particular with the type of slicing you’re after.

If you’re looking for optimal use and quick delivery, this is it.

Manual meat slicer

Generally speaking, manual meat slicers are more old-school and are going out of fashion. The main perk that they offer is that it enables the user to have a more hands-on approach on how they would like to slice their meat.

The main downside that they have is that they are slower than their counterparts. However, the additional sense of touch and control make it worth it.

Whatever model you chose to go with, make sure you properly weigh the pros and cons and how it might adjust to your current lifestyle.

Power and speed

This point comprises of two points.

If you’re looking for optimal and quick delivery, it’s smart to opt for a model that has a higher

Watt rating. Since it operates faster, the meat will be sliced faster and quicker. This will save you a lot of time down the road.

When it comes to meat slicers, power often refers to how long you can comfortably use the meat slicer without any decrease in quality. Likewise, this feature also aids a lot if you’re planning on using meat slicers to attend to things such as cheese and bread.

You don’t want a meat slicer that only gives you a couple of months of performance, do you?

When it comes to meat slicers, there are a plethora of options to choose from. Along with other features, there is also one more thing that can differ from model to model – the material from which it is made.

Durability should be a priority when choosing the right model for yourself. Meat slicers generally come in three different materials: plastic, normal steel, stainless steel.

Of all the three, we highly advocate for stainless steel. Not only is the exterior strong and sturdy, but these models also last longer than the other two.

The size of a meat slicer is detrimental.

Different models come in different shapes and sizes. If you’re looking for something over the counter that you don’t have to worry about storing, then the best way to go about it is by choosing something that is easy to carry around.

Likewise, if you think you’ll be using the slicer only from time to time and on occasions, then you need to factor in things such as weight, dimensions, and how willing you are to carry it around from time to time.

Ease of operation is a good factor to consider if your primary reason for investing in a meat slicer is to make your life easier.

If you want to be comfortable and let the machine do its job, an automated meat slicer is the best way to go about it.

Furthermore, some models don’t require to be turned off from time to time during operation for cooling purposes. Likewise, they don’t require any sort of meat preparation, as well. These are good additional features to consider.

Ease of cleaning

All meat slicers have to be washed from time to time. Doing that right, however, requires a little bit of patience.

Most models come with interchangeable parts that you can clean in the dishwasher. The more parts you can clean that way, the easier it is to clean the meat slicer in general.

Watch out for this feature beforehand, lest you end up getting something that needs to be cleaned by hand alone.

All types of motors, if they are of a considerable size, produce some sort of noise. Likewise, there’s also a decent chance that the model you’re considering will produce noise as well.

If this is an issue for you, we advise you look for something on the more expensive scale of things.

Safety should always come first when you’re dealing with things like these.

Since meat slicers come equipped with big and sharp blades, you need to be careful with them.

Make sure that you get something that has simple assembly and won’t require you to use extra push or force when getting the job done. This is arguably the simplest way to keep yourself safe from cuts and minor injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asking the right questions will get you the right answers. However, we’ll spare you that intellectual exercise and address questions that are most commonly asked by users!

The general principle of a meat slicer is rudimentary to all models out there.

You attach the food to a sliding tray, and then proceed to slide the tray over the rotating blade. The blade will cut the meat into thin slices.

No. doing so would damage the blade and the motor. However, it is highly recommended that you cut through chilled meat since the texture is better suited for cutting and slicing.

No. a meat slicer cannot cut through bone, which is why it’s a good idea to inspect the meat first. If you want to cut bone, then it’s highly recommended that you look into some latest bone saws.

Different models have different levels of thickness that they can cut through. On average , most meat slicers can easily deal with one inch of thickness.

You can virtually cut anything that can be cut with a mandoline slicer. This includes cheese, tomatoes, bread, and anything that you would require to be cut into perfectly thin slices.

To do that, you first have to disassemble the whole thing. Once done, proceed to clean and lubricate the blade. After that, follow the instruction manual and use the sharpener to get the job done.

A meat slicer isn’t dangerous in the traditional sense. Misuse or abuse of a slicer is what can make it dangerous for normal operation.

It is highly recommended that you look into cut-resistant gloves when dealing with meat slicers. A good pair of gloves will do two things for you: keep your hand safe from unwanted cuts, and reduce any chance of lingering smell of meat on your fingers.

If you’re planning to clean your meat slicer, then you need to follow a particular order of steps to get the job done right. Here’s how we recommend you go about it!

Since there is a motor in the slicer, meat slicers are prone to making noise. However, at any stage if you feel that the slicer is producing more noise than usual, then it’s time to get the meat slicer checked.

Smart ways to use a meat slicer

In this day and age, the one thing that is extremely valued as a resource is versatility. If one given thing can be used for more than one purpose, then that gives you more the reason to go out of your way to acquire it.

This sentiment is applicable for meat slicers as well, as you’ll see shortly. The main aim of this segment is to highlight the different ways that you can use a meat slicer, and what are some smart ways that you can go about making the most out of them.

Before we get started though, it’s a good idea to consider getting the best meat slicer for yourself first. Once you’re satisfied with what you have in mind, then proceed forward.

Brain over brawns

At what value, people often underestimate the importance of a good meat slicer. Some people view it as an accessory that they can use to cut meat and cut meat only.

Old-school individuals believe that going down this road takes us away from the delicate art of meat handling and processing. However, this cannot be further from the truth.

With the right meat slicer, you can accomplish more than one given task at hand. Other than all the benefits it provides, you can use a meat slicer in a manner that will save you both time and energy down the road.

Things to do differently

There are several ways that you can utilize a meat slicer in a manner that will make its functionality smarter and give you more than your initial investment. In the upcoming read-up, we’ll highlight our best tips and tricks you can employ to use your meat slicer in a smarter way!

Don’t just cut meat

As surprising as it might come off for a few individuals, a meat slicer shouldn’t be used only to cut meat.

When using a meat slicer, you can also cut a plethora of things that need to be cut into slices and pieces.

The general rule of thumb dictates that anything that can be cut with a mandolin can be cut with a meat slicer. Since the process is automated and works in conjunction with a motor, there is no factor of sloppy or inconsistent work. All the cuts and delivery will be spot on and symmetrical, which is a great thing to have if you’re looking for a presentation.

Onion slices and similar delicacies can be made easier with a meat slicer. Anything that you want to cut ultra-thin and feels might take up too much of your time can be used on a meat slicer.

However, we would also suggest that you take extra attention to the cleanup afterward. You don’t want leftover carrot crumbs in your next round of beef, do you?

Bread and cheese

Bread and cheese is arguably the most commonly found food item in the house.

If you’re looking for a quick snack, these two are the ultimate solution. With a meat slicer, however, the solution just gets a little cleaner.

If you want to break them down or shred them into little pieces, for whatever use or dish that you fancy, a meat slicer will make your life much easier. Carrying these tasks out by hand can often become daunting and take too much of your valuable time.

To make the job easier and less of a hassle, we highly recommend that you use a serrated blade to get the job done.

The main benefit that this will give you is ensuring that there is little to no sticking or crumbling present when the job is done.

Likewise, we also recommend that you follow through with a little cleanup to get rid of any bit of bread or cheese stuck to the inside walls.

Let the machine take its time

One thing that new users and beginners often are guilty of doing is rushing the process.

Like all things, using a meat slicer the right way also requires a little patience. Under the impression that the operational cutting time is reduced marginally, people often assume they can make haste with the process.

When using a meat slicer, the best way to go about it is by making sure that you let the machine take its time.

A good cue to base the operation on is to let the meat glide through into the slicer. Don’t try to force it in or put too much force.

Doing so would only make matters worse and can lead to slicer damage down the road. It can also weaken the motor.

Furthermore, letting the meat slicer take its time will also make sure that the cutting process is smooth and gives you fresh and smooth meat pieces to work with.

Make use of flat surfaces

Whenever you’re about to cut meat or anything for that matter, make sure that you cut it up into a flat surface first.

By doing that, you’ll increase the area of the object which will face the motor. Since you want optimal delivery and want to maximize efficiency, this is arguably the best and the easiest way to go about it.

This method will also ensure that the meat is cut in a uniform manner. If you’re opting for a presentation and want to prevent any sort of harsh cuts, this is the best way to go about it.

Cut meat when it’s cold

Cutting meat when it’s cold will make the job easier for you.

Top chefs around the globe highly recommend that before you set out to do the job, put the meat into the freezer about thirty minutes prior.

This will prepare it in the exact right manner that is optimal for the slicer.
Cutting warm meat can often lead to the loss of juicy-ness people often associate with meat. It will also make the job a little difficult and make the cleanup process a hassle.

Best way to clean a meat slicer

Now that you’ve seen the best way to pick a meat slicer and the best way to use it safely, it’s time we actually start getting our hands dirty.

The main objective of this segment is to discuss the best way to go about cleaning a meat slicer.

Let’s be real here; no one likes dirty appliances. This statement increases tenfold if we’re talking about appliances that come in contact with our food. In that regard, a meat slicer definitely fits the bill.

However, cleaning the slicer the right way can be a little daunting. With all the interchangeable parts and things coming off, one is always left wondering what to do next. However, worry not, we’ve got you covered.

The Importance of Proper Cleaning

As we’re all aware, food residue and other organic edibles are susceptible to bacterial and fungal growth if left out in the open. If consumed, they can lead to several foodborne illnesses.

Though they might not be fatal, such illnesses are still a nuisance to deal with. Luckily for us, there’s an easy way to work around it, and it won’t even take much of your time if done right!

How often should a meat slicer be cleaned?

Generally speaking, it is highly advised that you clean the meat slicer after every use.

This is to ensure that there is no food debris or particles left behind that can serve as a host for bacterial growth. When used again, the latter can often serve the basis of propagation for bacteria that are detrimental to our health. So why take the risk?

Such bacteria can also significantly alter the taste of the next round of food that goes through the slicer. What results is a cycle that can have severe consequences down the road.

To make sure that this doesn’t happen, and as mentioned above, clean the meat slicer right after use.

Getting started

When setting out to clean your meat slicer, there are a couple of things we’d like you to keep in mind.

For starters, it is highly advised that you use protective/anti-cut gloves when dealing with blades. This is for your own safety.

Read the manual thoroughly before you proceed with the cleanup work. This will also give you pointers about the proper disassembly.

Lastly, never ever use steel wool for cleaning the blades. In most cases, this will end up damaging the slicer and render your model useless.

Cleaning the meat slicer – an elaborative step-by-step

  • With dry hands, first, proceed to unplug the meat slicer from the socket. Also, make sure that all the relevant buttons are switched off before you do this. You don’t want anything turning on instantaneously when you turn the switch back on.
  • Wear the cut-resistant glove and set the blade setting to zero.
  • Using a paper towel, or any type of cloth, simply wipe away any type of large food residues on the slicer.
  • Once done, proceed to disassemble your meat slicer piece by piece. Pay utmost attention to details since you’ll be dealing with sharp objects here. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing gloves, always ensure that your grip is firm and hard.
  • Proceed to fill the dishwasher with hot water. Hot water is suitable because it has a better ability to penetrate grease and other substrates that might attach to the slicer. Additionally, it is also a better solvent for the detergent to function in.
  • Refer to the instruction manual and dip the relevant parts into the hot water. Clean it thoroughly.
  • Once done, rinse the parts thoroughly as well and use running hot water to get the last traces of detergent out.
  • Using a small brush, proceed to clean out all the small crooks and crannies of the meat slicer. This is where you clean out things like screws, knobs, and handles.
  • If your meat slicer already has a knife removal tool in the package, it is highly recommended that you utilize it.
  • You are now officially done with the bulk of the cleaning work.
  • Now, proceed to the sanitizing bit of the slicer cleanup.
  • Using a bleach solution, clean the slicer thoroughly. Feel free to apply several layers, over and over again, and scrubbing gently.
  • Once you’re done with the bleach solution, allow the slicer to dry completely on its own. Do not use a paper towel or any other cloth-like substance to make the process go faster. It will make things worse down the road.
  • When the slicer dries off completely with all traces of bleach gone, apply olive oil to the slicer. Be gentle and meticulous with the process.
  • Once again, wait for the slicer to dry on its own. Do not rush the process!
  • When the slicer is dry, you can now proceed to reassemble the parts. Follow the instruction manual if you haven’t committed the steps to memory. Either way, we recommend that you be careful with this and not rush the whole thing.
  • You have officially cleaned out your meat slicer. Congratulations!

Important note

The importance of cleaning out your meat slicer after every use cannot be emphasized enough. Though it might not be apparent at first, prolonged misuse can actually lead to serious illness later on.

Likewise, it is also of utmost importance to ensure that you take all relevant safety precautions when it comes to dealing with the slicer. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Nothing is more important than your physical well-being.
